Legacy homes passed down to the next generation are a specialty for J. Martin Builders. This beachfront property had been in the family for more than a decade when the current owners decided to create a new place to raise their children, host family gatherings and eventually retire in.

“It is really satisfying to know that we’re providing the setting for years of family events and memories,” shares Jason Gerbozy of J. Martin Builders, which has been delivering quality craftsmanship for custom-built homes for nearly 20 years.

The pool has a light radius along the negative edge and a tile that blends well with sea colors. When you look out from the lanai, the transition from pool to ocean appears seamless, says Gerbozy.

“Having lived in Hawaii for 15 years we had a clear vision of the style of home we wanted and how we wanted to live,” says one of the homeowners. “This is the second home Jason from J. Martin Builders has built for us, and we knew he could deliver our vision and overcome the challenges that come from a full custom build.”

Ahead of the build, Re-use Hawaii did the deconstructing and salvaging. “We were glad to see the materials getting new life rather than just sending them all to the landfill,” says Gerbozy.

Peter Vincent Architects was the design architect and architect of record for the project. “The owner was looking for a clean and modern-style home that would serve as a tropical sanctuary for their family,” says Todd Hassler of Peter Vincent Architects.

The home features six en suite bedrooms that can comfortably host visiting family and friends.

The residence features a main home, guest house and garage. “The H-plan configuration provides a double courtyard, which are both used as transitional spaces,” adds Hassler. The mauka courtyard has the motor court and exterior vestibule framed by the garage and guest house while the makai courtyard serves as the entertainment area. Here, there’s an expansive lanai and covered dining space that extends from the main house and opens to the ocean.

For the new house, Peter Vincent Architects’ design is stunning, says Gerbozy. Not only is it beautiful, he says, it’s also comfortable and ideal for gathering and entertaining.

The two-story “wings” of the house provide excellent cross-ventilation, shares Hassler. The separation also provides the great room with a towering roof with cathedral ceilings and high windows.

The ultimate goal was to provide a seamless connection from the interior to the exterior, says Hassler. The 32-foot pocket lift and slide doors in the great room, from Quantum Windows and Doors, help to accomplish this. One side opens to the lanai, pool and ocean, while the other reveals the reflecting pond and garden, shares Gerbozy.

Steve’s Gardening Service was brought on for the landscaping work, using designs from landscape architect Loriann Gordon. The property also includes a saltwater infinity pool and reflecting ponds designed and built by DeBiasi Pacific.

Gerbozy credits the collaboration with local suppliers and professionals for the success of this project — and the homeowners couldn’t be happier with the results.
